Financial inclusion for more than 1 billion people thanks to mobile

Houlin Zhao, Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), pointed out that there are more than 1 billion people who are not banked but who have access to cell phones, so that they can be covered by a new wave of financial inclusion through mobile services. During the opening of WTDC 2017, Zhao reiterated the role of the "4I": Infrastructure-Investment-Innovation and Inclusion, as the pillars to achieve the UN Sustainable Development goals. The ITU secretary asked for more Latin American participation warned on "not letting ICT development only in the hands of operators".

Government analyzes partial privatization of Copaco

The state operator is going through a delicate moment. Its income does not cover operating expenses and it must fulfil a debt obligation of US$110 million. Furthermore, the lack of investments led to the obsolescence of its infrastructure. Oscar Stark, president of the firm, states that alternatives are being evaluated to obtain the necessary funds, including the possibility of adding private partners. And he believes that in 18 months "the situation will be resolved."
