ITU-T Study Group 20 moves forward with its work on IoT and Smart Cities

The ITU-T Study Group 20: Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart Cities and Communities (SC&C) meeting was held in Geneva from 4 to 15 September 2017, with the participation of more than 150 international experts. The major accomplishments of the meeting included giving consent to 8 draft Recommendations, agreeing on 6 new Technical Reports and approving 36 new work items.

ITU-T Study Group 20 (SG20) works on the standardization requirements for IoT, with an initial focus on applications for smart cities and communities. After the first meeting of the year, held in Dubai from 13 to 23 March 2017, a new meeting was in September, giving consent to 8 draft Recommendations, one of which was revised.

The first is ITU-T Y.4201, on "High-level requirements and reference framework of smart city platform". This was followed by ITU-T Y.4200, on "Requirements for interoperability of smart city platforms" and ITUT Y.4116, on "Requirements of transportation safety services including use cases and service scenarios". Consent was also given to draft Recommendation ITU-T Y.4117 "Requirements and capabilities of Internet of things for support of wearable devices and related services"; ITU-T Y.4500.1 "oneM2M - Functional Architecture"; ITU-T Y.4455 "Reference architecture for IoT network capability exposure"; and ITU-T Y.4806 "Security capabilities supporting safety of the Internet of Things". The revised draft Recommendation is ITU-T Y.4101/Y.2067, on "Common requirements and capabilities of a gateway for Internet of things applications".

One of the greatest accomplishments of this meeting was the collaboration established between the ITU-T and oneM2M. oneM2M is a global initiative which was launched in 2012, which aims to ensure the efficient deployment of M2M and IoT and for which it develops technical specifications for a common M2M Service Layer that can be embedded in various hardware and software devices. During this meeting, Nokia, together with other ITU-T members, submitted 48 contributions related to oneM2M technical reports and specifications. Following a long debate, the creation of 24 new work items was approved; consent was granted to a draft Recommendation (ITU-T Y.4500 "oneM2M - Function Architecture) and 6 new Technical Reports were agreed.

With regard to the work of the regional groups, the Latin American group designated Ms Katrina Naut, Executive Director of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (INDOTEL) as the Vice-chairman of the ITU-T SG20 Regional Group for Latin America (ITU-T SG20RG-LATAM).

Also, during this meeting, the results of the first meeting of the Focus Group on Data Processing and Management to support IoT and smart cities and communities (FG-DPM) which was held from 17 to 19 July 2017 in Geneva, were presented. The second meeting was held from 20 to 25 October 2017 in Geneva as well.

The SG20's calendar for the coming months includes a meeting of the Regional Group for the Arab Region (SG20RG-ARB) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 19 to 22 November 2017; and a meeting of Working Party 1/20 in Geneva on 24 January 2018, which will be preceded by Rapporteur meetings on SG20 Questions 1, 2, 3 and 4 from 15 to 23 January 2018. The next SG20 meeting is scheduled to be held in May 2018.
