MWC Americas 2018 - Content producers anticipate 5G impact on audiovisual business

Intel chose to focus on content during its event prior to the start of the Mobile World Congress Americas (it starts today in Los Angeles). Vicky Colf, CTO of Warner Bros., said: "We are committed to 5G because we recognize that it will impact on how our fans and consumers interact with our content, but not only that: if we look at our production and distribution operation, it will fundamentally change the way they work, the way our creatives and employees work day by day will improve".

Mike Davies, Senior VP of technical and field operations at Fox Sports, referred to the 5G trial held at the US Open golf tournament, which counted with the participation of Intel, Ericsson, AT&T and Fox Sports. The executive referred to golf as "a tremendously inefficient sport to cover", due to the need to deploy multiple cameras in each hole. But he anticipated that the high speed and low latency of 5G will allow the wireless cameras to operate together with the fixed ones, and improve the capture of the action during the tournaments.

The state operator is going through a delicate moment. Its income does not cover operating expenses and it must fulfil a debt obligation of US$110 million. Furthermore, the lack of investments led to the obsolescence of its infrastructure. Oscar Stark, president of the firm, states that alternatives are being evaluated to obtain the necessary funds, including the possibility of adding private partners. And he believes that in 18 months "the situation will be resolved."
