85% of Internet access is made through a mobile phone, reaching six times more accesses than fixed networks. However, they only represent 14% of national traffic, so the challenge is to increase the deployment of fixed networks and the capacity of mobile networks, according to a study by the Subsecretaría de Telecomunicaciones (Subtel) (Under-secretariat of Telecommunications).
The aforementioned study provides unprecedented and revealing figures of the data consumption of Chileans, both in mobile and fixed networks. Thus, between August 2017 and July this year, users demanded 6.45 exabytes in fixed networks (equivalent to 1.173 billion hours of 4K video) and 1.04 exabytes in mobile phones (equivalent to 189 million hours of 4K video). Adding both, the total consumption is 7.49 exabytes, equivalent to 1.363 billion hours of video in 4K, 1.6 billion photos seen on social networks, and 2 billion songs listened to.
