CLT 2019

Chile evaluates a 5G creative tender that can be moved to verticals

Pamela Gidi, head of Chile's Subtel (Undersecretary of Telecommunications), today pointed out in CLT 2019 that they are working in "creative" ways to structure the spectrum auction for 5G, so that it is open to retail and wholesale operators. "We are seeing how to" lower "the verticals. In Chile there are tremendous areas of silence, without mobile coverage, and in 5G it is very important that the digital divide be closed, because productive sectors are not in general in urban centers (perhaps manufacturing only) ".

The official called on the audience to ask about the meaning of "win in 5G", in reference to the race that seems to be disputed between Latin American countries to raise the flag of pioneers in the new mobile generation. "If" win in 5G "is to bid, we are looking at it in an unambitious way. It is not to launch services or fix antennas, but the entire ecosystem is involved, all industries," he said.

The agency warned that there is a lack of binding regulations and data on cyberattacks. Weak governance in the matter does not help either. Emerging countries and financial institutions that began teleworking after the Covid-19 pandemic are more at risk.
