During the meeting in Valencia, the participants adopted a Call to Action, consisting of 10 objectives. “Our cities are powerful engines of economic growth. But they are also the main source of greenhouse gas emissions and the main driving force behind our energy consumption," said Chaesub Lee, director of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Bureau.
The actions contemplated are: connecting cities with the objectives of sustainable development; lead in the application of “border” technologies to protect the environment and combat climate change; use international standards as a guide for development; adopt principles of circular economy to reduce electronic waste; implement a smart city platform to integrate smart technologies; take a proactive stance on "border" technologies; involve citizens, researchers and others interested in developing standards and technologies to meet the needs of end users; adopt principles of digital rights that ensure the inclusion of the entire population in the development of sustainable and intelligent cities; accelerate the transformation with a circular approach; and promote partnerships to achieve the objectives of the 2030 agenda.
