The expansion of non-GSO satellites brings new spectrum demands

The possible multiplication of new systems will allow the expansion of broadband coverage in neglected regions, but will require the development of new technical and regulatory frameworks to improve the use of available frequencies and avoid interference.

Next generation non-geostationary orbit (non-GSO) satellite systems that can provide broadband to the end user will be a central issue to the work of the ITU Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) for the next World Radiocommunication Conference of 2019 (WRC-19). The possibility of improving spectrum efficiency and facilitating the implementation of broadband services in neglected and underserved regions brings with it the need to facilitate more efficient spectrum sharing between next generation non-GSO satellite systems in frequency bands of fixed-satellite service (FSS), while protecting other services.

New Media Law expected to be approved in February, when the Senate resumes work

The regulation expands the number of licenses that an operator may hold and consolidates access to new markets. The government proposed a media and Internet market without limits. There are crossed criticisms due to the determinations set forth in the text. The regulator - Ursec - is working with the regulation and is preparing to execute it.

Starlink and the deregulation of the satellite services market in Argentina

While Starlink's recent entry into the Argentine market generated media attention due to the decree signed by the new government, background information indicates that the company has been licensed to operate in FSS since 2020 and worked with ARSAT to coordinate frequencies. Experience in other countries in the region shows that high costs and user experience limitations could restrict its widespread use in Argentina.

At WRC 23, GEOs twisted the arm of Non-GEOs

Geostationary systems, supported by the majority of country representatives, prevented changes to the power limits that apply to LEO systems and are intended to preserve GEO communications from interference. The fate of the upper part of the 6 GHz band remains unresolved. Today is the last day of discussions.

Geopolitics dominates the second week of WRC-23 and brings the Non-GEO constellations into debate

Russia and Iran said that these satellites should not illuminate their territories if they have not authorized them. They target Starlink, among other providers. Without progress in the debate on the 6 GHz band. Neither with BeiDou and their request to add GMDSS services.
