Who competes with Telecom?

The mega-merger seeks to establish itself in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. And there are signs of its search for expansion in the region with a possible first stop in Chile.

After Telecom-Cablevisión merger, Telefónica tries to become strong in its original southern area, updating its obsolete copper networks in order to provide multiple services over fiber to the home. Claro experiences with the Internet and competes with prices and high bandwidth in the surrounding sites with the objective of having fiber to complement its mobile broadband services, whose demand grows requiring speed and capacity.

Silica Networks to build the last stretches of the Austral Fiber Optic

The Subtel (Undersecretary of Telecommunications of Chile) awarded Silica Networks, belonging to the Datco Group of Argentina, the construction of the deployment of the last two terrestrial trunks (Aysén and Los Lagos) of the Austral Fibra Óptica (FOA) project. The subsidy allocated for the Aysén project was US$ 6.188,470 and for the Los Lagos project US$ 2.608,510.

Telefonica's net profit increased 10.6% despite a decrease in revenues due to depreciation of the Argentine peso and the Brazilian real

The Spanish operator reported a net profit of € 926 million between January and March. Revenues totaled € 11.979 billion: in organic terms this implies a 3.8% increase but in reported terms there was a 1.7% decrease due to variations in exchange rates, especially in the two Latin American countries. The Brazilian operation showed a 5.2% decrease in revenues, that of Hispam Sur (Chile, Argentina, Peru and Uruguay), of 12.1%, and that of Hispam Norte (Colombia, Mexico, Central America, Ecuador and Venezuela), continued stable.
