The globalization of 5G: Open RAN and industrial private networks, the keys to solving the mystery of monetization

Adoption proved to be faster than 4G technology during 2020. 5G deployments had a stoppage due to the coronavirus in January and February, but from March the projects had restarted. Industrial private networks are emerging as a use case that can make operators’ balances favorable.

Fifteen percent of the world's population - roughly 1 billion people - lived in 5G covered areas by the end of 2020, according to the Ericsson Mobility Report. The percentage will rise 60% in 2026. In the first publication of the bi-annual report, last June, the expectation of subscriptions for the end of 2020 was 190 million. But even in the framework of Covid-19, there was an acceleration in the adoption that brought the total to 220 million: the reasons are in the construction of networks by operators, and the rapid contracting of services in the Chinese market.
