Wom already shares with Claro third place in number of mobile users

Six years after its arrival in the Chilean market, Wom, the operator linked to Novator Partners fund, was three places behind Claro, in a virtual tie for third place in market share as of December 2020, with 5.2 million subscribers between both companies, with a percentage of 20.76%.

Entel led the market share with 31.89% and Movistar was in second place with 24.78%. In clients under contract, Entel tops the list with 34.8%, followed by Movistar, with 27.4%, Wom registers 21.3% and Claro is last with 14.8%.

Wom's strategy was marked by a price cut, reducing the plans by 40% and the value of the gigabyte by 95%, and an aggressive advertising campaign, since its arrival in 2015, after buying the assets of Nextel, which at that time had 303,000 subscribers. In its first year, Wom reached one million customers. Now its project is to reach 25% market share in two years.

The state operator is going through a delicate moment. Its income does not cover operating expenses and it must fulfil a debt obligation of US$110 million. Furthermore, the lack of investments led to the obsolescence of its infrastructure. Oscar Stark, president of the firm, states that alternatives are being evaluated to obtain the necessary funds, including the possibility of adding private partners. And he believes that in 18 months "the situation will be resolved."
