Big Players Map Day 2021

CEO of Entel Peru: “Our focus with 5G is and will be mobile. FWA business does not work"

Ramiro Rafarga was categorical at the opening event of Big Players Map Day 2021 yesterday, organized by Convergencialatina. The event, which continues today from 9.30 a.m. Argentine time (to register, enter here), began with experiences of commercial cases and 5G pilot tests in Latin America. Entel Peru, which debuted with these benefits last March, faces a plan of "strong deployment" for the next three years, so that it is "one of the main growth engines", in the words of Lafarga.

Current 5G coverage covers Lima, Trujillo, Piura and Arequipa. “Our focus is and will be mobile. FWA is to muddle through. The equipment is expensive, in the order of US$500. The ARPU is very low. For Peru, with a very high churn level, the FWA business does not work", he said.

In contrast to this, 20% of mobile phones purchased in Peru are 5G: the executive assured that the cost of the equipment has already fallen, standing below US$200. “It is the way to make the industry grow , that technology becomes massive”.

Furthermore, the lack of investments led to the obsolescence of its infrastructure. Oscar Stark, president of the firm, states that alternatives are being evaluated to obtain the necessary funds, including the possibility of adding private partners. And he believes that in 18 months "the situation will be resolved."
