Investment in telecommunications in 2021 totaled US$ 882.4 million and grew 14.6% compared to 2020

As reported by the Organismo Supervisor de Inversión Privada en Telecomunicaciones (Supervisory Body for Private Investment in Telecommunications), this progress was mainly due to the higher investments made by Grupo Telefónica and Grupo Claro, which registered growth rates of 57.2% and 54.6%, respectively, and which together represented 66.1% of the sector's investments. Meanwhile, in the same period, Viettel's investments increased by 47.6% and those of Grupo Entel decreased by 0.9%.

During the year 2021, the operating income of the telecommunications companies recovered significantly and registered an increase of 17.4%, compared to the year 2020 and 4.7% in relation to the year 2019, thus exceeding the levels prior to the pandemic caused by Covid-19.

The growth registered in 2021 is mainly due to the expansion of revenues from the sale of equipment, which was 65.2%, the increase in revenues from mobile services, 10.3%, and higher revenues from the fixed Internet service, 16.9%.

Mobile services and fixed Internet together accounted for 65.1% of the sector's operating income.

At the end of 2021, all economic groups registered increases in their operating income compared to 2020. The cases of Grupo Entel and Grupo Claro stand out, with increases of 37.7% and 19.3%, respectively. Viettel registered a growth of 15.1%; while DirecTV's revenues grew by 9.7% and those of Grupo Telefónica, 7.2%, compared to the results of the year 2020.
