AT&T and Verizon to delay 5G deployment in airports until July 2023

They agreed on the delay until airlines can install upgrades to radio altimeters. The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) reported that operators have offered to "continue some level of voluntary mitigations for another year."

“We believe we have identified a path that will continue to allow aviation and 5G C-band wireless technology to coexist safely,” said Acting FAA Administrator Billy Nolen. "We appreciate Verizon and AT&T's willingness to continue this important and productive collaboration with the aviation industry."

AT&T and Verizon will power up their equipment in "carefully considered phases" as airlines modernize their planes. This phased approach requires regional aircraft operators with radio altimeters most susceptible to interference to retrofit them with radio frequency filters by the end of 2022.
