The U.S. Department of Justice recommended to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deny the permit for the installation of the first submarine telecommunications cable that would connect the United States with Cuba.
In the communiqué, the Justice described the Cuban government as a "counter-intelligence threat", due to the fact that ETECSA would manage the cable landing system. On his part, the vice-chancellor of the Central American country, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, rejected the refusal in his Twitter account.
The ARCOS-1 USA Inc. underwater cable system made the request to the FCC to adapt its network, including the first and only connection of this type between the United States and Cuba. It currently connects 24 landing points in 15 countries on the continent.
