Aurora submarine cable to start operating under a maintenance consortium model in 2022

FP Telecommunications in its first phase will face the construction of the 2,750 km line, linking the United States, Panama and Colombia. But then an operator will be selected for the cable, and partners who acquire capacity will take over the maintenance of their fiber pairs and landing stations. Luiz Fuschini, president of FPT, anticipated that the investment in the project amounts to US$ 355 million.

The Aurora submarine cable project was created in late 2017, with the signing of the construction and deployment contract between the United States-based FP Telecommunications (FPT) and Alcatel Submarine Networks. The start date of operations is scheduled for October 2022, under a new model for Latin America, in which FPT will only be the developer behind the construction of the cable: once completed, it will select an operator for the cable, and the costs of maintenance will be faced by customers who purchase fiber pairs. The latter thus become “partners”, with responsibility for their capacity and landing stations.
