On Sunday Ecuador elects a new Government with Rafael Correa banned

On February 7, more than 13 million Ecuadorians will choose from an unusual number of 16 candidates - 15 men and 1 woman-, amidst Covid-19 prevention protocols, the new president. Union for Hope (Unes), from the center-left, with the Andrés Arauz - Carlos Rabascall formula, leads the voting preference. 137 members of the Assembly and five representatives of the Andean Parliament will also be elected.

The pandemic, which put Ecuador on the front pages in March 2020 when the health system exploded in Guayaquil, is not the only exceptionality of these elections. Former President Rafael Correa, who governed the country between 2007 and 2017, cannot stand as a candidate due to a decision of the Justice that convicted him of aggravated bribery and made it impossible for him to perform public functions.
