Remote management of luminaires: Argentine cities already take advantage of power savings and improved efficiency

The control and monitoring of the light points is consolidated as a first step in the constitution of a Smart City. It generates data and infrastructure capable of being used in other smart city verticals. In addition, as it is an already mature market in technological terms, it is experiencing its own evolution from 3G and 4G to NB-IoT, which will lead to greater economic viability.

The City of Buenos Aires (CABA) kicked off in Argentina seven years ago: of the 165,000 electricity points, more than 90% are remotely managed. Magdalena Aybar, Local Alumbrado (Lighting) director, recalls that the original goal was ambitious, since it aimed to replace with LEDs and remote management, in parallel and at the rate of 3,000 lights at a time. With the implementation (a mix of 4G provided by Claro and unlicensed technologies), the measurement of fault indicators allowed us to see the behavior of the luminaires in the face of external factors, such as rain, and thereby cut the response time to complaints from neighbors to a half.  Currently, 80% of service orders are processed from Alumbrado Directorate before a claim is filed and 75% are served within three days.
