The redefinition of network architecture, one of the results of Movistar's Open RAN experiment in Puerto Madryn

The deployment of the Spanish operator in the Chubut city is iconic for Latin America and for Telefónica itself, since it is the only company with this number of users and traffic “stressing” a network in a commercial way.

The open interfaces and multiple component manufacturers approach proposed by Open RAN calls into question the roles of the stakeholders involved, the nature of contracted vendors and the indicators under measurement, as part of a macro context in which the local level is transforming the concept of virtualization itself. Thus, Movistar's experience with the activation of 14 Open RAN sites in Puerto Madryn represents a redefinition of what has been established in terms of network architecture. And it is part of a general moment in the redefinition industry: when Argentine operators started virtualization processes in the core, they began to implement virtual machines and NFVs: today, said Diego Scalise, manager of Architecture and Technological Evolution at HISPAM, we should turn “almost to zero” to opt for another path, of “cloudification” or of containerization of applications.
