LATSAT 2023

Satellite service providers see no significant drop in connectivity prices throughout the region

This is because the entry of LEO services has not yet had a definitive impact on the overall supply of satellite connectivity. The downward trend in GEO capacity prices is very slight and the value per Mbps in teleports in the region is homogeneous. LEO competition could be felt in latency-sensitive services, they admit.

According to the consulting firm Euconsult, the price of fixed satellite service (FSS) capacity is decreasing rapidly due to an increase in the availability of next-generation High Throughput Satellite (HTS) systems, both in geostationary orbit (GEO) and non-geostationary orbit (NGSO), such as Starlink. However, representatives from service providers gathered at LATSAT 2023 stated that this trend is not observed at a regional level.

Starlink and the deregulation of the satellite services market in Argentina

While Starlink's recent entry into the Argentine market generated media attention due to the decree signed by the new government, background information indicates that the company has been licensed to operate in FSS since 2020 and worked with ARSAT to coordinate frequencies. Experience in other countries in the region shows that high costs and user experience limitations could restrict its widespread use in Argentina.

At WRC 23, GEOs twisted the arm of Non-GEOs

Geostationary systems, supported by the majority of country representatives, prevented changes to the power limits that apply to LEO systems and are intended to preserve GEO communications from interference. The fate of the upper part of the 6 GHz band remains unresolved. Today is the last day of discussions.

Geopolitics dominates the second week of WRC-23 and brings the Non-GEO constellations into debate

Russia and Iran said that these satellites should not illuminate their territories if they have not authorized them. They target Starlink, among other providers. Without progress in the debate on the 6 GHz band. Neither with BeiDou and their request to add GMDSS services.
