Nokia: The AI supercycle and the new paradigm for global network traffic toward 2034

The Finnish vendor expects global WAN traffic to grow exponentially, driven largely by direct AI-generated traffic. This will substantially reshape optical, IP and transport networks by creating sustained demand for high-capacity connectivity to and between data centers, affecting everything from the metropolitan edge to the regional core.

Telecommunications infrastructure is on the threshold of a major transformation. According to the international “Nokia Global Network Traffic Report 2026,” global WAN traffic is projected to grow exponentially over the next decade (2024-2034), driven by the so-called “AI supercycle.” The analysis covers public Internet services, private and managed WANs, and data flows between data centers, excluding local traffic confined to a single location.
