Agustín Siboldi, partner at Estudio O’Farrell, warned at Internet Day 2025 that the new wave of technology—led by data centers for artificial intelligence, crypto-asset mining, and electromobility—will require high-availability networks. “Something disruptive is coming in the future, but for it to materialize in Argentina, macroeconomic conditions must be stable,” he stated.
The lawyer emphasized that the industry is in a transitional phase, not yet a mature one, and noted that the main barrier to fiber-to-the-home deployment lies at the municipal level. He called for a federal authority with local engagement and an economic regulatory approach focused on competition defense, as is already the case in the energy and oil & gas sectors.
Siboldi also pointed out that the business focus must move beyond mere connectivity to include aspects such as the tax regime, fair share, data protection, and cybersecurity. “Municipal fees are very creative, and each one has to be litigated. But we have a huge federal advantage that we must leverage,” he concluded.
Siboldi shared the panel with Lorena Torres López from BlueNote MC, who outlined three key pillars for the sector: investment, efficiency, and generating new revenue streams. She highlighted recent spectrum auctions in Colombia and Peru as positive examples, where payment was made through investment commitments. The consultant also emphasized the role provinces can play as “anchor clients” to ensure demand and enable sustainable networks, as well as to promote more predictable and streamlined regulatory frameworks.
