Debate on controversial bill to reform Telecommunications Law could take months

The proposal submitted by the Executive Branch to reform the Telecommunications Law sparked a strong discussion due to the possibility of granting excessive power to the designated state agency (the ATDT) to exercise censorship in the media and social networks. The president, Claudia Sheinbaum, requested its revision.

Amid the political storm triggered by the proposed reform of the Telecommunications Law, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced her willingness to modify or eliminate the most controversial part of the law, which enabled the Agency for Digital Transformation (ATDT) to control the content displayed in media and on social networks, a step toward censorship according to opponents of the law.
