Since 2014, the satellite operator has been the only one with the provision of MEO services, with a fleet of 20 satellites. When combined with its 54 geostationary artifacts (3 of them HTS), it reaches a coverage of 99% of the world population. Oscar Castillo, General Manager of Sales for Global Governments, compared the proven services of this network at MEO to a low orbit plagued with launch announcements, but “very congested”. He also recalled that the objective of SES with these fleets is not the residential business - like OneWeb in LEO - but B2B services.
The launch of the SES 17, HTS and Ka-band capability over Latin America is scheduled for 2021, combined with the first phase of putting O3b mPower into orbit. Castillo defined these incursions as a "breakdown of the satellite paradigm", since with the second generation of medium orbit artifacts, they aim to reach sites without fiber optics with latencies similar to those of fiber. O3b mPower's commercial service start is scheduled for 2022.
Along with the congestion in LEO raised by Castillo, during the virtual event organized by Convergencialatina at the end of August, the speakers agreed that the accumulation of space debris in low orbit is a challenge to be solved. And that, curiously, the first certainties for LEO come from the traditional actors of the satellite world, who enter this orbit. Telesat and TIWS conducted tests on the Phase 1 device, and confirmed that wireless backhaul is viable, even with improvements over geostationary satellites. Latency of 30-60 milliseconds was demonstrated in applications such as seamless high definition video streaming, video conferencing with users with cellular and terrestrial connections, and VPNs.
