Movistar presented TuGo, an application that allows to use the mobile number from any screen, both to make and to receive calls and SMS to any fixed or mobile line using Wi-Fi or a cellular network. This tool eliminates Roaming if used abroad, connected to the Internet , by paying for communications the tariffs in force in Argentina.
TuGo can be downloaded in up to five devices. It also provides access to call history, synchronized SMS and voice messages beyond the phone. To do that, the information of each line will be stored in Telefonica's cloud.
Marcelo Tarakdjian, director of marketing for Movistar, told Convergencialatina that the launch required an investment of US$4.96 million on the platform. "As it is a regional service, device data will be stores in the company's Datacenters in Miami", he said.
The application, which is an exclusive development of Telefónica Digital, will be in beta version where it will be tested by some 50,000 customers, and it will be available in a few months so that all users of Movistar may download it. " We hope to have 500,000 customers using the application by year-end", as Tarakdjian estimated.
Argentina is the second country where Telefónica launches the service; the first one was the United Kingdom. "Argentina was chosen because it is a very receptive country in terms of applications", said Tarakdjian. Pablo de Cara, Business Administration of Telefónica UK, told Convergencialatina that after one year as from presentation of the application in his country, some 500,000 Telefonica customers are using it. It is a relatively modest figure when considering that the company has 23.5 million customers in the UK, with a penetration of 50% of smartphone, according to its balance sheet for the first quarter of 2014.
Both executives confirmed that the application will be presented in several countries in the region.
