The mobile telephone operator, who acquired the local company U Mobile (Cel*Star), will begin to offer its services through an initial investment of US$ 60 million. The Irish company, of the executive Denis O¿Brien, will aim the investment to create a new brand, offer 24-hour customer services, new rollover minutes and prepaid roaming- and new equipments like the Motorola F3 and of the gamma Konka. Just like in the rest of its 22 operations in the region, Digicel will introduce: per second billing system, free activation of equipments, e-mails and free credits with the purchase of each prepaid line. The assistant-director of Digicel in Guyana, Leslie Buckley, underlined that the company’s aim is to double penetration levels within the short term.
Guyana, with capital in Georgetown, has 800,000 residents and a 22% mobile penetration.
