Satellite Map Day 2022

Space as a Service: a revolutionary expansion

Satellite operators face a future of business expansion “unthinkable some time ago”, according to Eduardo Lema, president of Satellite Service, in the face of new satellite constellations.

So that this view can be deepened, it has been necessary to make the client independent of the orbit, the operating frequency of the band, the bandwidth and the latency, among other issues, Lema added.

At this point, Lema announced that the Satellite Service is in negotiations with several LEO satellite fleets and has evaluated the solutions to be provided. “These LEO satellite networks are changing the way things are done. Having a global IoT platform changes the way to see business”, he observed.

For Lema, the task of Satellite Service and of other firms in the same segment is to do "a detailed engineering, so that in each particular case we can have a specific solution to that need and in that place".

The practical application of the concept opens paths in verticals such as Oil & Gas, mining and agriculture.

During his participation in the Satellite Map Day 2022, Lema pointed to the doubts regarding the hardware to be used due to the difficulties that arose in the development of satellites, something that deepened during the pandemic, and the extra costs that this entails.

In the case of Nexat (previously known as SatADSL), the deployment of its platform already has a concrete experience from its agreement with the Eutelsat Advance network. Fulvio Sansone, CTO of Nexat, reported that the association between both is long-standing, since 2012. "We did a lot of business with them in the connection of several of their facilities", he recalled.

Reinforcing the idea that neXat is satellite operator agnostic, Sansone said that “the Advance network is good for us because it allows us a single point of entry. It is also good news for our customers, because it allows them to access the entire Eutelsat offer in the world together with other teleports and service providers in a single point, our neXat platform”.

The approach "enriches the offer of added services to all customers who enter our teleports," stated Sansone, who stressed that "access to the Advance network gives certainty and stability in the prices we offer".

Looking to the future, Sansone considered that “the evolution will be mainly in services, which will improve. The real battle will take place in value-added services. We are advancing in terms of flexibility and costs, in uses, with the possibility of several services in the same terminal, perhaps through Wi-Fi distribution and growth in terms of management”.

IMF alert: cyber attacks on financial system increase and lack of policies to face challenge

The agency warned that there is a lack of binding regulations and data on cyberattacks. Weak governance in the matter does not help either. Emerging countries and financial institutions that began teleworking after the Covid-19 pandemic are more at risk.
