The member states of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has elected Doreen Bogdan-Martin of the United States as the next secretary general of the organization. Bogdan-Martin will be the first woman to lead the ITU.
The election took place during the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-22) in Bucharest, Romania, on Thursday, with Member State representatives voting during the morning session of the meeting. Bogdan-Martin won with 139 votes, out of 172 votes cast.
Bogdan-Martin will begin her four-year term as ITU Secretary-General on January 1, 2023.
