The head of the Professional Council of Telecommunications, Electronics and Computer Engineers (Copitec), Miguel Ángel Pesado, participated in the second day of Nplay Southern Cone 2023, where he warned that the 3.5 GHz tender should be carried out after an efficient cleaning of the spectrum to avoid possible future implications.
Pesado explained that the 3.5 GHz band, which is planned to be auctioned, went through different historical stages, in which it was assigned to different services. "These services generated an overlapping of radioelectric activity that the State has neglected," he said.
The specialist assured that at present the degree of occupation is not clearly known: "an eventual recipient may find that the spectrum is occupied. This would give rise to a legal problem, but also a technical one, because it would not be possible to use the bands and a bidding process could even be aborted."
Along these lines, he commented that according to a recent analysis of the Frequency Band Distribution Chart managed by Enacom, the 200 Mhz band includes "services that ceased to exist many years ago. It is very useful spectrum, which is absolutely wasted", he lamented.
The head of Copitec also spoke about the link between telecommunications and Artificial Intelligence. He assured that the application of AI to frequencies could allow one to administrate a common spectrum to all operators. This could also lead to lower costs.
