Antel has 49% share in mobile telephony market

The Communications Services Regulatory Unit (URSEC) published the 2022 Telecommunications Market Report, in which they measured various verticals of the Uruguayan market. In terms of data transmission and Internet income, the sector reached US$236,451,877, while 1,135,500 fixed broadband services were recorded, of which 982,689 are fiber optics (87%). In this area, Antel has 99% of the connections, with 1,125,288.

Meanwhile, revenues in mobile telecommunications reached US$12.181 billion and 6,947 radiases were recorded, of which 3,225 are from Antel (46%); 1,949, from Claro (28%); and 1,773, from Movistar (26%).

In the mobile market, Antel has a total of 2.36 million subscribers, which represents 49% of the market. They were followed by Movistar, with 1.41 million (30% of the market) and Claro, 986,000 subscribers (21%).

Lastly, the paid TV sector registered income of US$154,939,152 as a result of 573,746 services (an interannual decrease of 5.5%). In total, a drop of 33,163 customers was verified, a trend that has been registered since 2016. Among the prominent operators, Directv of Uruguay stands out, with 30% of the market (176,411); followed by Cablevisión (8%), TCC (7%), Nuevo Siglo (6%) and Monte Cablevideo (6%).

5G contracts progress as ICE raises additional concerns

The Comptroller’s Office has given the green light to the contracts signed by the six operators (two national and four regional) to begin the deployment of 5G. The state-owned ICE plans to take legal action if Sutel does not approve its agreement with Racsa to provide fifth-generation mobile phone service.
