New extension of Claro and Movistar concessions due to delay in new contracts

The Government issued a new two-month extension (now five) for the concessions held by the operators Conecel (Claro) and Otecel (Movistar). The extensions guarantee the provision of mobile services while the discussion continues over the terms of the new contracts.

The delay in reaching an agreement is linked to two issues: on the one hand, the delay in the valuation of the radio spectrum; on the other, the lack of an opinion from the Ministry of Economy and Finance on the budgetary impact and the risks that this negotiation will entail in the fiscal accounts.

In dialogue with Expreso, the Minister of Telecommunications, César Martín, highlighted that the recent problems in the telecommunications service, related to power outages, also motivated the inclusion of contingency plans in the new contracts.
