Satellite Map Day 2025

XSAM plans to have the Focus constellation in orbit by the end of the decade

Erwin Beccari, CEO of XSAM, presented the Focus Project at Satellite Map Day 2025. It involves a constellation of microsatellites equipped with SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) technology for infrastructure monitoring. Designed for low Earth orbit, it includes the capability to perform low-cost differential interferometry analysis. “Our goal is to democratize access and offer monitoring and data services to the insurance market,” he stated.

As a spin-off, they are in the final development phase of an MVP for drone-based observations. The City of Buenos Aires has expressed interest in the service for monitoring construction projects.

Beccari took part in an innovation panel, which also included Sebastián Monsú from IA SAT. This start-up focuses on the use of AI applied to optical and radar satellite data. Initially conceived for disaster detection, its applications can be expanded into other areas. Born within the framework of Argentina’s VENG, “its focus is to provide a platform that connects the scientific community and start-ups, allowing new applications to emerge and fostering the creation of new ventures. It’s an innovation incubator,” stated the director of Strategy and Alliances.

Diego Favarolo, president and CEO of Space AI, announced that the company, in collaboration with Uruguay and NASA, will carry out a mission to the Moon in 2027. The company was founded in Silicon Valley and its first mission was launched in 2021 in partnership with the Nuclear Sciences Laboratory at UNAM. On that occasion, they validated a nanomaterial that was integrated into their software. They also participated in experimental rocket flights. “We are currently working on the final stages of deploying our first supercomputing patch in LEO,” he said.

For his part, Franco Magni, a Remote Sensing Specialist at Lemu, explained that in the Southern Cone there is a significant challenge in obtaining images of land, forests and key ecosystems. In this context, the Chilean start-up developed a hyperspectral satellite for Earth observation, with a focus on biodiversity. The satellite was launched in August last year via SpaceX and is already operational. Its ionic propulsion system extends the mission's lifespan.
