Open Cosmos presented its shared constellation strategy during Satellite Map Day 2026, a model that seeks to combine national capabilities with cooperative architectures to expand coverage, increase data availability and improve the economic sustainability of space projects.
Alberto Pérez Cassinelli, the company's vice president of data, explained that the Open Constellation initiative allows different countries to participate in the same orbital infrastructure while maintaining access to their own Earth observation capabilities.
The model proposes that participants add satellites to a common constellation and, in return, gain access to data generated by their own assets and to information produced by the entire network.
According to Pérez Cassinelli, the model seeks to increase observation frequency, distribute investment costs and leverage economies of scale that are difficult to achieve through standalone programs.
"Open Constellation is a mutualized model in which different countries participate in a shared constellation."
The company also participates in the Atlantic Constellation, which consists of eight satellites focused on maritime monitoring and tracking activities in ocean areas.
Pérez Cassinelli also noted that Open Cosmos promotes local industrial integration models through developing production capabilities and incorporating national suppliers into the projects' value chain.
Another highlighted aspect was data governance. According to the executive, countries retain control over the information obtained within their areas of interest and over images downloaded through their ground stations, while the shared architecture allows them to take advantage of the operational benefits of a larger-scale constellation.

For the company, these types of schemes offer an alternative for countries seeking to develop space capabilities without individually assuming all the costs associated with a complete orbital infrastructure.
