BCG: Brazil should double its data center capacity by 2030

Brazil should double its installed data center capacity by 2030, according to Márcio Kanamaru, a senior adviser at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) for the telecommunications, media and technology (TMT) sectors.

Kanamaru linked this expansion to investments in digital infrastructure and policies targeting the sector, including the Special Tax Regime for Data Center Services (ReData).

“Thus, Brazil should double its data center capacity by 2030,” he said. According to Kanamaru, major investment projects currently underway in the country are related to the construction of this infrastructure.

The executive also linked this scenario to the approval of ReData and other tax incentives. In his view, these measures should accelerate investment and data center projects in the Brazilian market.

According to Kanamaru, the availability of computing capacity in the country is also part of the debate over digital sovereignty. He mentioned companies interested in keeping customer and partner data in the country, as well as training models locally.

“It is important that we have installed data center capacity here for this to take place,” he said. However, building data centers does not exhaust the debate. Kanamaru argued that public policies should consider a broader technology supply chain, including domestic semiconductor capacity.
