Brazil will hold a presidential runoff next Sunday, with incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva facing opposition senator Flávio Bolsonaro.
In the first round, held on October 4, Bolsonaro led with 47.03% of the valid votes, while Lula received 45.16%. The difference was 2,227,651 votes, or 1.87 percentage points, according to data from the Superior Electoral Court (Tribunal Superior Eleitoral, TSE). Since neither candidate secured more than 50% of the valid votes, a runoff will take place on Sunday.
Although the latest polls show a technical tie between the two candidates, political analysts say the winner will be the one who manages to attract the attention of the 33 million voters who did not vote in the first round.
According to AS/COA, violence ranks as voters’ top concern, followed by the economy, corruption, health, social issues and education.
