Incorporating transformative public policies in urban planning actions and establishing design values that support these technology-based implementations are two of the areas that the United for Smart Sustainable Cities (U4SSC) initiative recommends focusing on in order to reach United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11, which deals with Sustainable Cities and Communities, by 2030. The U4SSC is backed by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), UN Women – the United Nations agency for gender equality and women's empowerment, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP-FI), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Regional Office of Sciences for Latin American and the Caribbean of the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
