The activity of smartphone factories in the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego increased 169% during the first half of 2021 compared to the same period last year. The latest report from the Association of Argentinean Electronic Terminals Factories (Afarte, in Spanish), with data from the Directorate of Industry and Commerce of that province and the GFK consulting firm, reported a production of almost 5 million smartphones between January and June, close to tripling the 1.8 million in the same section of 2020 and increasing production by almost 50% compared to the 3.5 million in the same section of 2019. The year-to-year difference and the increase registered this year are partly explained because the second quarter of 2020 passed the hardest phase of mandatory isolation to combat the pandemic, with factories closed. Now a year-end with a production somewhere between 9 and 10 million units is projected.
