Telefónica reshapes Hispanoamérica: Colombia and Peru in play

These are the last two divestments of the Spanish operator in the region. Its operations remain in Mexico and Chile, the largest, and in Ecuador, Uruguay and Venezuela, the latter with the burden of a recent investment of US$ 500 million to deploy 5G in that country.

In Emilio Gayo’s first public appearance as Telefónica’s CEO, on March 31, the executive reaffirmed the company’s path to exit Spanish-speaking Latin American markets, which began with the sale of the Argentine subsidiary on February 24. During the virtual event “Expansión Catalunya” (organized by the Spanish media outlet), he recalled that, following the divestments already completed, five operations remain—Mexico and Chile as the largest, and Ecuador, Uruguay, and Venezuela as smaller ones: in those markets, sales will proceed if attractive value-generation opportunities arise: “If not, we will continue doing what we do—optimizing capital to the fullest.”
