Economist and former guerrilla fighter Gustavo Petro took office in August 2022 as the first leftist president elected in Colombia’s history. According to polls, his administration enjoyed majority approval during its first months, although his approval ratings later fell. Eventhough the Constitution bars him from seeking reelection, Petro became a central figure in the campaign and turned the election into a kind of plebiscite on his government.
