The digital Caribbean: Connectivity's bright spots and challenges in a fragmented region

According to the GSMA, 5G connections will account for nearly a quarter of mobile connections by 2030, although they will be concentrated in three territories: Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. The association says a more conducive regulatory environment is needed to consolidate the telecommunications modernization process.

The Caribbean is at a crucial stage in its digital development, as connectivity begins to translate into real productive transformation. In 2025, mobile technology and services accounted for 8.1% of regional GDP, generating US$21 billion in value added and supporting 170,000 jobs, according to the latest GSMA report, “The Mobile Economy Caribbean 2026.” However, moving toward deeper digitalization poses structural challenges.
