ICT Law of Colombia seeks to leave guidelines for Latin America

With the development of the sector, the new rule aims to contribute with a growth of 18% of the national GDP per capita. It modernizes regulation, creating a single entity that was highlighted as an example for the entire region. Governmet grounds the change as a requirement of convergence.

At the beginning of June, the Law for Modernization of the Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) sector or Law 152 was passed, which is awaiting presidential enactment. The Colombian government is betting that this regulatory framework will help reduce the digital divide, increase the national GDP by 18% per capita -according to studies by the National Planning Department-, increase the country's broadband service by 70% for 2022, promote investment in the sector and make resources more efficient by unifying funds for TV and ICT. It proposes to grant to a Single Regulator the powers that, up to now, the Comisión de Regulación de Comunicaciones (CRC) (Telecom regulator) has, to consolidate television and telecommunications services in a convergent organization.
