Claro and Tigo have won spectrum for 4G through an auction organized by the National Telecommunications Commission (Spanish: Comisión Nacional de Telecomunicaciones, CONATEL), and together with the Hondutel will provide the service within 15 to 18 months in at least 10 cities. This was announced by Ricardo Cardona, president of the regulator.
Claro obtained the 1730-1750 MHz and 2130-2150 MHz blocks, having bid more than US$ 12 million. A slightly higher amount was offered by Tigo, which won the 1710-1780 MHz and 2250-2280 MHz blocks. These values represent the highest paid price in the country’s history of telecommunications tenders.
