3G connections to exceed those for 2G this year

This is so foreseen by Cisco in its Visual Network Index 2015 for mobile segment, although the study itself states that by the end of 2014, the second generation technologies served over 40 million accesses (61% of total accesses) and those of third generation served some 26 million. In 2019, according to the report, there will be 86 million mobile connections in Argentina: 19%, 2G; 71%, 3G and 10%, 4G.

Gonzalo Valverde, Cisco Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay Sales Regional Manager of Service Providers, highlighted the 6% increase in mobile users in the country during the last year -it reached 31.8 million-, as it doubles the 2, 8% compound annual growth recorded in the country. In particular, he stressed that 5.2 million smartphones were added in 2014 and that they represent 30.3% of all mobile devices.

The use of smartphones impacted significantly on mobile traffic, which grew 78% in 2014, a rate three times greater than that recorded for fixed networks studied in the year. Speaking to Convergencialatina, Valverde attributed this to the video, which captured 54% of consumption.

In 2019, mobile traffic in Argentina will be 1.8 exabytes per year, seven times more than the figure recorded in 2014, of which 70% will be for video. Connection average speed foreseen the Index for the country in 2019 will be 1.2 Mbps, against the current 0.3 Mbps.
