The city of Neuquen uses data from mobile lines to plan transport

The Municipality contracted Telefonica’s SmartSteps platform that allows tracing the movements of Movistar subscribers within the Neuquen capital to know about the mobility, people flow, peak times, and identify trends and patterns of users.

In a first step this analysis of Big Data will be used to plan the new Metrobus that the Municipality will design, which is expected to be running next year. "Today to make decisions we have to look at data, not read news. Neuquén doubles its population every 10 years. Knowing mobility patterns of the inhabitants will be able to invest with less margin for error," said Horacio Quiroga, mayor of Neuquen, at a press conference in which Convergencialatina participated. He also predicted that in a second step these reports will be used to measure the mobility of the metropolitan region, and in a third, tourism.

Sabrina Muñoz, Manager of Big Data Monetization at Telefónica, said that to collect data they use signaling of Movistar mobile lines and then it is extrapolated to generate the sample.
