The Mexican company América Móvil presented the new image of the former Verizon Dominicana, acquired in December for US$ 2.067 billion, which includes the change of the operation name. As it was explained by Eduardo Valcárcel, director of public relations and corporate image of the company, América Móvil decided to take the name CODETEL for fixed telephony and data businesses and Claro for its mobile telephony assets. Valcárcel stated that "Claro and Codetel's merger represents growth and evolution in technology, services and coverage, strengthening the leadership position América Móvil has in all the countries where it functions".
In December 2006, América Móvil fulfilled the purchase of Verizon Dominicana's 100% after months of negotiation with the General Tax Management (CGII). The entity requested Verizon the payment of US$ 500 million, 25% of the sale, in taxes. Finally, Dominican authorities accepted the payment of US$ 170 million to put an end to controversies.
