Senate takes up project created by the Superintendency of Telecommunications

After several years, the discussion was resumed yesterday in the Transport and Telecommunications commission, in a session that had the participation of the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Gloria Hutt, the undersecretary, Pamela Gidi, as well as guests from the Asociación de Telefonía Móvil (Atelmo) (Telephone Association Mobile) and WOM.

Of all the regulated sectors in Chile, the telecommunications sector is the only one that does not have a superintendency, so in November 2011, the Government entered a bill to create this body. The discussion was frozen in 2014 and now the bill is in a second constitutional process in the Senate. The idea of creating the "Supertel" is to separate the roles currently fulfilled by the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel), which on the one hand is in charge of promoting policies on the matter, and on the other, has the role of supervising the actors in the industry.
