The President of the Republic, Lenín Moreno, the Minister of Telecommunications and the Information Society, Andrés Michelena, and the General Manager of the Corporación Nacional de Telecomunicaciones, Martha Moncayo, presented on Santa Cruz Island, the project for the deployment of submarine cable to the Galapagos Islands. The cable covers the Manta-Puerto Baquerizo Moreno route, in San Cristóbal, Puerto Ayora, in Santa Cruz and Puerto General Villamil, on Isabela Island. It is approximately 1,280 kilometers long, has a useful life of 25 years and an initial capacity of 10 gigabits per second, which will be increased according to the requirements of the island's inhabitants. With its implementation, it increases the current bandwidth 10 times.
The project is executed with a direct foreign investment where several companies participate, such as Galapagos Cable Systems, which as a direct investor will develop the cable installation together with its strategic partners: Xtera, with more than 60 projects in the production of equipment and Prysmian Group/Siemens, an Italian multinational, which is responsible for the manufacture of electrical and telecommunications cables.
