Matías Fernández Díaz, Senior Public Policy Manager at Mercado Libre, pointed out that electronic commerce went from representing 4% of retail trade in the region at the beginning of 2020, to 8% today.
Mercado Libre grew some 4 years last year, with 175,000 small companies that joined in 2020. 65% of the companies that sell through the platform generate between 4 and 11 jobs each. Fernandéz Díaz highlighted that last year 200,000 jobs were created in the logistics industry, a growth that was estimated towards 2025.
As for Mexico, electronic commerce grew 81% in 2020, according to Juan Carlos Altamirano, General Director of Innovation, Services and Internal Trade of the Ministry of Economy of Mexico. In addition, some 50,000 women signed up for the digital empowerment program launched by the agency.
