Claro performed a 5G pilot test at Barrancabermeja refinery

With the participation of the Minister of ICT, Mauricio Lizcano, the President of Ecopetrol, Ricardo Roa, and the President of América Móvil Colombia, Juan Carlos Archila, tests were conducted to showcase 5G technology for industrial use at the Barrancabermeja refinery. The objective of these tests was to seek solutions for remote assistance, video analytics, and real-time information and data transmission, which generate efficiencies in time and costs.

For the test, a mobility-restricted specialist engineer who couldn't physically be present at the refinery provided online technical assistance to a rotating equipment reliability engineer in training. Using 5G devices and an assisted reality viewer, the specialist visualized information and images in real-time through the Teams virtual meeting platform to guide the sequence of activities in one of the Hydrocracking units of the refinery.

Juan Carlos Archila, President of América Móvil Colombia, stated that "as strategic allies of Ecopetrol, at Claro, we are implementing industrial solutions based on 5G that respond to their digital transformation and technological adoption process in their operations. Undoubtedly, the reduced latency and speed provided by this fifth-generation network allows guided work to be carried out in the field by individuals located in another country. Technology should be available to all companies in the country to optimize costs and time in daily tasks," he affirmed.
