President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has sent a package of twenty initiatives to the Chamber of Deputies, including the elimination of the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT).
During the presentation, the president stated that the regulatory work results of the IFT have been meager, despite the authority receiving a budget of US$ 671.4 million between 2018 and 2024.
"The IFT has not been effective in combating monopolies in the sector, despite its gigantic organizational structure and the high salaries of its commissioners," said the López Obrador government to justify the liquidation of the IFT and transferring its functions to the federal Executive.
In response, the IFT issued a statement indicating that its autonomy has helped bring Mexicans out of backwardness. For example, since the existence of the IFT, approximately 94 million Mexicans have accessed mobile Internet services.
Additionally, the statement highlighted that in economic terms, for every peso invested by the State in support of the IFT's work, benefits worth 45.5 pesos have been generated.
