Latin American Satellite Congress 2024

Creating a “space cemetery” is a priority

On the second day of the 23rd Latin American Satellite Congress, held in Rio de Janeiro, an innovative and essential topic was discussed: sustainability and resilience in space.

Erika Rosseto, Director of Orbital Dynamics at Embraer and member of the Space Data Association, commented on the paradigm shift in the space industry.

"A few years ago, no one was talking about these topics, but today they concern all of us. We don't have a 'space cemetery,' and this must be a priority, especially given the number of satellites in orbit. Otherwise, in 200 years, space could become unusable."

Rosseto also raised a key question: "What will happen to the old and large satellites that are becoming obsolete?" The panel agreed that regulations play a critical role in creating a more optimistic future for space debris management. Currently, of the 104 U.S. satellites in orbit, only 65 are active.
